Take U.S. 2 west several miles out of Iron Mountain, Michigan, and pick up Route Seventy toward Eagle River. The rolling hills of this route provide vista after vista of this forest primeval.

Driving route mapAlthough maybe not for everyone, a trip of the Great River Road (GRR) offers much compared to the average interstate. It changes route frequently, crossing the Mississippi River when it can, and dallying in towns all other roads have forgotten. Driving the GRR, road trippers can escape creeping RVs, semi trucks, and endless billboards usually found on other routes. Other rewards include wildlife and local color.

South Bend/U.S. 20, IN route mapA century past, the Midwest United States brought Americans from a period of horse and buggy to the modern age of the automobile. Like its northern neighbor, Michigan, the state of Indiana spawned the growth of several hundred automobile nameplates during those early years. Many evolved along a corridor that linked South Bend to Auburn, Indiana. Serving as the drive train between the two cities is U.S. 20, a 62-mile stretch of weathered and cracked 2-lane referred to by Hoosiers as the “Avenue of the Classics.”

Savanna, IL route mapKick off this portion of the Great River Road (GRR) drive in the lovely town of Savanna, Illinois, on the Mississippi across from Iowa. Savanna offers much for the antique-hunter. There are also pretty Victorian mansions sitting on top of the bluffs. A must see is Mississippi Palisades State Park, accessed by driving north from Savanna on Route 84. A drive through this park offers wonderful eroded bluffs and beautiful river views. Cross the river from Savanna to Iowa and head south on U.S. 67 for the Quad Cities (Davenport, Rock Island, Moline, and Bettendorf) from Savanna where the terrain becomes flatter than might be expected for about 50 miles. Southwestern Louisiana route mapThis 105-mile, 2-1/2 hour route winds through wildlife refuges, prairies, marshes,  and Gulf shoreline in southwestern Louisiana and is a favorite of birding and shelling enthusiasts. The leisurely drive is best accomplished fall through spring, and insect repellant is  extremely recommended. The drive takes off from Sulphur, just west of Lake Charles on I-10. Its name is taken from the huge mineral deposits found in a nearby salt dome. Going south on Route 27, it goes across the Intercoastal Waterway and passes Calcasieu Lake. Beyond the bridge, the landscape changes dramatically to a brackish tidal marsh, followed by oil fields and a shipping channel.
