Dayton to Shell, WY route mapThe sixty-mile drive on U.S. 14 from Dayton to Shell takes approximately 2 hours. The highway  is occasionally closed in the winter.  Head west on U.S. 14 from Dayton and follow the Tongue River as it runs toward the Big Horn Mountains.

On your way to the Little Tongue River Canyon, pull over at the Sand Turn Pullout to watch  Buffalo Tongue Rock. This is one of the rock layers that slanted as the Big Horn Mountains rose around 2.9 billion years ago. At the Little Tongue River Canyon, pull over at the Fallen City turnout to view huge limestone chunks that fell from the ridgeline along the canyon. If you plan to be one of them, you might appreciate getting out of the groups for a day or two during your visit. Lost City, NV route mapThe Moapa Valley Drive offers excellent  vistas of Lake Mead. The 110-mile long Lake Mead and the 1.5 million-acre recreation area were created with the construction of Hoover Dam. It took almost 2 years of tunneling and digging to divert the river, two years to block the canyon with about 7 million tons of concrete, and some 5000 workers working around the clock to complete the project.  Checking and driving out the views in the Mead area will remind you of the enormousness of projects that humans can accomplish. Elko, NV route mapThe 2-hour Lamoille Canyon Scenic Byway  leads into the Ruby Mountains on Forest Road 660. This great drive is Mother Nature’s panorama at its best with mountains and desert. The 34-mile  drive through the Humboldt National Forest is closed in the winter. Trace Route 227 east of Elko to the start of the byway.  As soon as you are into the national forest, you’ll dead-end in Lamoille Canyon. To the right, you will see  the 11,387-foot Ruby Dome. Anchorage, AK  route mapDriving the stretch of Alaska north to south is definitely not a proposition for the faint-hearted. We’ll take it in three detailed stages. Start off  simple in Anchorage, and take Route 3 north. You’ll experience the grandeur of the nation with a selection of fine scenery. Prepare to spend some time at Denali National Park, home of Mount McKinley, the highest peak in North America. A pit stop in Fairbanks will end this run for most first timers.
